Imagine being brought back from the dead. When the trailer dropped for this, I was super intrigued. I wasn't sure at first if it would be something I was into. But, as you all know, I'm always willing to give anything a shot just to say I tried it. I didn't know this before, but this show is actually based on a series of graphic novels, Warrior Nun Areala, but don't necessarily need to read it to understand what's going on. Warrior Nun introduces us that the battle of good and evil gets more real in modern-day Spain. A group of nuns called the Order of the Cruciform Sword help to protect people by battling supernatural forces. One, in particular, becomes the warrior nun – a woman given powers from an angel's halo placed in her back. When the latest warrior nun, Shannon, is killed, the angel's halo gets implanted into a dead girl, Ava. The power of the halo brings Ava back to life and new circumstances that cause chaos. Now the Order of the Cruciform Sword has to find Ava and recruit her into their ranks... All before the world gets overtaken by evil. Since I'm not familiar with the source material, I can't say if the show is similar or completely different from the graphic novels. What I can say is that for a show with complex deep religious and historical undertones, it handled all of everything well with only a few flaws. Alba Baptista quite literally shined throughout the whole show. She played confused, doe-eyed Ava so perfectly. I could feel how lost Aca was that comes with coming back to life. Even more so, I could relate to how she was more interested in taking advantage of the new body she gained. I understood why she would rather party than have the responsibility of saving the world from spiritual evil. It creates a season-long tension between what Ava wants to do and what her new life should be doing. That slow burn was worth it in the end. While we go through Ava's self-discovery as a side-plot, we get introduced to this brand of badass female fighters that brings back memories of Sailor Moon to me. Every woman who played the warriors had their own being, personality, and back story to make them compelling without being side pieces of Ava's. Wearing that habit didn't stop them from being cold-hearted dispellers of evil. This show can go in many directions, and the bonus is – we have at least one more season already to look forward to seeing where it goes. I'm really excited to see where this goes.
Jail to whoever decided to end this first season on a cliffhanger!
