Our childhoods are officially getting modernized. This was a book series that I believe fully impacted me today. It taught me leadership, the importance of friendship, and that being a teen is hard. So how does it hold up to modern standards? The Baby-Sitters Club is about five different girls come together to start a business club where the girls babysit for their community. The idea was started by Kristy, a tomboy girl boss, who noticed how her mom struggled to find a babysitter for her little brother. She recruits her best friend Mary Anne, a shy, deep-feeling girl, and Claudia, an artistic fashionista, to join her club. They meet several times a week to coordinate times and to just hang out as friends. Soon, Stacey and Dawn join their ranks to round it up to five babysitters in their club. The Baby-Sitters Club soon turns into a good business, but also an outlet for the girls to grow closer as well as dealing with their own problems. It's been a while but Martin's book series still hits so near to my heart after all these years. The Baby-Sitters Club reminded me of why I liked it so much in the first place – It's complete with girls who are complex and their own person, trying to figure out who they are and how they want to make their mark on their community. I love the strong sense of loyalty to each other, compassionate about things, and is dedicated to a cause is still just as hard-hitting as it was to me as a teen. I love how each episode modeled after different perspectives of the girls. One episode we're learning how Kristy is struggling with her mom and her boyfriend. Another shows us how Claudia navigates her weird family dynamic by having her grandmother be her rock. Don't forget other features of how Mary Anne feels the pressure to live up to her father's expectations. This only scratches the surface of what we learn. However, it reminds us that while these girls are friends and form one big group, they're individual people all on their own. The show definitely doesn't shy away from the hard issues. The Baby-Sitters Club has stories featuring divorce, bullying, racial prejudice, divorce, transgenderism, and more. No problem is too big to tackle for the girls which were so nice to see. While the answers aren't easy to be found, the girls do their best to tackle them the best way they can. We've seen major tweaks to the series to give us some diversity and problems in the modern age. It's amazing that the series keeps its magic after all these years.
I'm such a Claudia it's not even funny.
