Stars Hollow, Connecticut meet Serenity, South Carolina. I'll be honest - ever since the Year in the Life, I haven't been able to stomach doing a rewatch of Gilmore Girls yet. The good thing is we're not here to talk about that, but how this might fill that void in the meantime! Sweet Magnolias centers around three lifelong best friends and their lives in Serenity. Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen are there to support each other in their high highs and their lowest of lows. All three women will embark on a new chapter of their lives together as they balance family drama and different struggles. Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen learn there's nothing stronger than friendship even when change comes along. If you loved Star Hollows, then you'll love Serenity. While Sweet Magnolias holds on its own, you can see the strong similarities enough. Serenity hosts an eclectic cast of characters that are charming and complex, but still flawed. Like Gilmore Girls, what makes Sweet Magnolias shine is its main women leading the show. Helen, played by Heather Headley, plays a compassionate lawyer but dreams of starting a family someday. Dana Sue, played by Brooke Elliot, is a talented chef in the kitchen but is struggling to keep her personal life (and her health) on balance. Maddie, played by Joanna Garcia Swisher, is trying to learn her new normal after her husband cheated on her, got his mistress pregnant, and is getting divorced. Despite their chaotic lives, they try to navigate the best they can before they fully sink under. This show is not without its faults. It's something that I call sickly sweet - it's great until it's a little too much. A lot of the scenarios seem weirdly too good to be true, a bit over-the-top, and undeniably cheesy. The bonus is the show is never bogged down by negativity, there always seems to be hope without being too preachy. But trust me, it works. I think what I enjoyed most about this was how Sweet Magnolias boasted its Southern charm. But the show never was too shy or quick to hide how not every community is perfectly sweet like one of Dana Sue's desserts.
Alright - who's willing to do a margarita girls night when this is all over?
