*throws all my money for more Black superheroes* In the new year, I dedicated one of my resolutions to branching out into genres that I'm not picking at first glance. There's nothing against the superhero genre, but I've seen enough to last a lifetime. (Though I do want to review them eventually so it's a weird feeling.) Raising Dion was a good, first pick into trying out my new resolution and did not disappoint. The show follows the plot of Nicole, played by Alisha Wainwright, is a newly-widowed single mother of Dion, played by Ja'Siah Young, who starts to experience mysterious superhero-like powers. Nicole has to keep Dion's newfound abilities in secret against people who wouldn't hesitate to exploit Dion. All while trying to find out what happened in the moments before her husband Mark, played by Michael B. Jordan, died. What really drives this show and makes it unique among other superhero content is Ja'Siah as Dion is an actual kid. He thinks his powers are "like magic," which just emphasizes his age and his innocent spirit. Also, he's the cutest little thing that it's hard not to just want to give him the strongest hug alive. I believe I was most impressed with this show because it lived in a fantastical world of children but still dealt with a dark reality. It showed how a family grieves and how a single mother raises a child. While Nicole got help from Mark's friend Pat, played by Jason Ritter, raising Dion is still hard even before you add he has superpowers. No matter what, she would do anything to protect Dion from any challenge that they face. Mode and had its kinks, but it was still good enough for renewal and I cannot wait for a season 2 to see where it improves. I would love to see Dion grow in his powers and Nicole gains confidence in her parenting skills because she's a good mom (but the best of us doubt themselves too). Also curious to see how that cliffhanger ending affects the crew later.
If there's anything I learned from this show, get you an Esperanza in your life!
