Where is my treasure hunt adventure? You, probably: Emily, how did you feel exactly binging this straight on the day it dropped? Me, likely: Well... Outer Banks follows a close friend group, affectionately calling themselves the Pogues, who live, well, on the Outer Banks. The Outer Banks is a well-known tourist destination near the coast of North Carolina. It's set off with a very noticeable divide between the working-class Pogues who live there and the upper-class vacationing Kooks. When a hurricane comes through and damages enough of the area, it sets off a domino effect for John B, played by Chase Stokes. Trying to find out what happened to John B's dad brings a life-changing discovery. John B and his Pogue friends will start a wild, highly dangerous treasure hunt that supposedly on the island to find answers about John B's dad. Forbidden romances, avoiding adults with hidden, unknown agendas, along with the escalating fights between the Pogues and the Kooks will make this a crazy summer to forget for everyone in the Outer Banks. Anything that's marketed and hailed as 'the next Goonies,' I'm always skeptical. I usually can't find anything that can capture the magic of the original treasure hunt and loyal camaraderie from the original. This proved me so wrong. Outer Banks is a type of show that will get you sucked in the intriguing teens and dramatic, edgy twists from the get-go. When I first met John B, I couldn't tell if he was supposed to be a likable main character or not. He often was reckless, to himself and his friends, with no care if there came consequences of his actions (I'm unfortunately turning into a cranky millennial I'm SORRY). However, you quickly learn why he was this way - his dad has been missing for a year with no explanation of where he went or why he left in the first place. You can't help but feel incredibly sympathetic towards him. It's why when he discovers that a possible local treasure is connected to his dad's disappearance, that makes you his number one fan. You hope he finds this possible hidden treasure first so John B can get his answers. The commentary on the class divide was also spot-on in this show. It's sharply written that you can feel the disparities right away. There's no build-up because these resentful feelings have been there for a long time before we saw this fictional timeline. It felt like John B with the Pogues were representing the community's struggle to survive; the Kooks lived in lavish vacation mansions on the other side. I wasn't sure if this was intentional or if my overthinking two brain cells think this way, but I liked it. They had to fight against their socioeconomic disadvantage, but also prejudice and stereotypes too. Teens, unfortunately, can't avoid these things either. This show is a classic Just One More Episode type of watch. It keeps you on the edge of your seat, dying to know if John B and his friends will ever find the treasure. In my opinion, The Goonies and Outer Banks are in similar zones but shouldn't be compared. They are their own things, and both deservedly good.
