History just got funnier. If you've seen any past stand-up comedy specials of Iglesias, then you know that you're in for a treat when he's the lead in Netflix's latest sitcom. Mr. Iglesias follows the story of, well, Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias as a goodnatured, hip public high school teacher teaching at his old alma mater. Iglesias can connect with his "misfit" students with his fresh and funny takes on teaching history. He goes the extra mile to be their advocates when upper administration would rather "counsel them out" than keep them in school to reach their full potential. Sitcoms sometimes get the bad wrap. People trash the cheesy humor and the chaotic jumble of ensemble castings, and the ever-present laugh tracks. This is not one of those sitcoms that deserve it. What I think makes this sitcom spectacular is Iglesias himself. The first reason being the fact he's not acting like a caricature of himself. He's not acting as a fictionalized public high school teacher. He's quite literally acting what Iglesias would be like as a public high school teacher teaching history. With his stylistic voices, hilarious on-the-spot quips, and timely delivery is all here. It's like watching multiple episodes of his stand-up shows with additional side characters as a treat. Now that isn't to say Mr. Iglesias doesn't have its faults. Some jokes are sitcom-worthy-cheesiness, I would never deny that. There's also the common joke-after-joke sequence where there's no pause to let a moment breathe from laughter. However, if that's all I can say is wrong then that's okay! If you're looking for something new and light-hearted to watch while spring TV seasons are winding down, then this can be an option for you. If you just need background noise? This can work too.
You'd never catch me back in high school, but I might make an exception for Mr. Iglesias!
