Time to tune in for a round three treat. Welcome back. Now we are in a rare Netflix season three territory. Does it hold up this time? In season 3 of Dear White People, Winchester's students are heading in a new direction. Sam has since stepped down from hosting her popular radio show. Joelle and Reggie are now dating. Lionel is embracing Winchester's local gay scene by becoming more involved. That's just scratching the surface. But the problems are the same – there's still racism, bigoted ignorance, internet trolls, graduate students unionizing, and even a sexual assault claim that divides the campus. Can Winchester and its students survive to see next year? Like real-life people, life at Winchester has changed. The characters are grown and focusing on new things. They've learned from their mistakes (kinda). That's on top of trying to find out how to make their mark on the world. There's also a secret society that is out there in Winchester's ivory halls. As I said, there are new things to focus on that ranges from new issues to new relationships. It was fun to watch this season take a new approach compared to its previous seasons. It was unexpected and kept me on my toes. That's not to say this season didn't have its moments of hiccups compared to its predecessors. Due to focusing on different issues and highlighting other characters, the show sometimes lagged and felt stunted. The standard of this show is it hops around to focus on a different point of view, but I thought there were one too many gaps in between plot lines. I did enjoy learning about more people and issues concerning them, which kept it fresh, despite those lags. To some, these changes from the original content may put them off and not connect to the material as they did before. I was not one of those people. The character development in this season was off the charts. Lionel finally came to terms (at his own pace!) with his sexuality. Joelle and Coco seemed to be ready to say their mind. Reggie was going for his dreams. Sam realized how people have their problems no matter their background. It was just amazing to see that these characters didn't stay still and grow. We are almost to the end of this iconic show. The fourth season is coming sometime before the year is over, and I can't wait to see it.
Giancarlo Esposito is the light in this season.
