This was a treat! My best friend Everett has been urging me to watch this since I can remember because he's seen it and loved it. I finally got enough of my watch list to get to this one. Dear White People was transformed into a TV show after the 2014 movie of the same name was such a hit. We learn right away all the ins and outs of the student body at Winchester University. In the aftermath of a blackface party, Sam White, a Black on-campus radio host, immediately wants to make a stand against racism that even the administration and higher-ups can't ignore. The first season begins to unfold how the blackface party is just one of many problems the university has in its academic halls. What can I begin to say? It was sharp and compelling in its voice, which made this show pretty remarkable to watch from beginning to end. Dear White People is not even close to being the most traditional show to stream. The timeline it covers is rather short - at best, it's about a two week or less stretch to squeeze everything in. I thought perhaps the show would feel compact by this untraditional structure. But the fast-paced nature of scandals at the university level happens that way. This show also smartly refuses to leave Black people in one large box. Every single Black person has a different view of how they approach race relations at Winchester. In every episode, we got a new perspective on someone's life, so we were able to understand where they stood. It wasn't afraid to tackle the real conversations I think we all need to have about racism. Not only did that, but they were able to make it funny. Do not be fooled though; despite bringing the jokes, Dear White People is not afraid to shake the table when it's necessary. The beauty of this show was that it gave everyone time to present themselves as individuals and not anything less. No topic shown is left unspoken or hidden because no one makes them a soundbite conversation. Everything is given its time, and that's what makes it wholly extraordinary.
The petition for Defamation to actually be filmed will be sent to y'alls inboxes shortly!
