I cannot even begin to tell you how into this concept I am. This was a series that came out of nowhere for me, but I can't say that did stop me from binging it all in one go. Cursed is a new take on the Arthurian Legend in another direction - the Lady of the Lake. It shows a young girl named Nimue with extraordinary powers. But everyone else in her village believes she's a witch and avoids her. When she gets chosen as her clan's next leader, Nimue tries to start a new life with her friend when she meets Arthur. Nimue meets the Red Paladins, who are trying to rid the world of magic and anyone who practices it. They attack her village, and she has no choice but to face her destiny to meet the legendary Merlin. Like with most things, we've seen tales of Arthur, his Round Table, and his prosperous kingdom of Camelot many times. Disney's done it, and so has Monty Python. However, we always got the Arthur treatment and never much of anyone else's perspective. This witchy twist was a nice one to watch because we finally got something new out of something old. It feels fresh and dark in all the right ways. Arthur's journey to Camelot was always a bloody one with winding ups and downs - Nimue's is no different. Her situation always seems impossible for her. Once she solves one problem, she has another one. It's never frustrating because Nimue is growing throughout the season because of it. She learns her powers are nothing to fear and understand when or how to use them to her benefit. This show is not perfect. It does take time to build a connection because there's not a background to go on for this show. We hop right in, which is fine but can be confusing at times before it all comes together. Also, the special effects and CGI work in some moments, but not in others. However, it never takes away from Nimue. She's innovative and compelling as a lead where I couldn't stop watching. The bonus is the ending of the season sets up perfectly for a mountain of problems for a potential season 2. I would love to see where Nimue ends up and discover how her becoming Lady of the Lake.
Keep coming with the fantasy, Netflix!
