Is blood thicker than water? Netflix really killed it for me with Elite. Hearing another international show with the same intrigue coming from South Africa made me super interested to watch this. Blood & Water introduces us to Puleng, a South African teen who has grown up in the shadow of her missing sister, Phume, all her life. After going to a party, Puleng becomes convinced Fikile is her missing sister. She transfers to Parkhurst College to investigate this suspicion. As Puleng gets deeper into her investigation, she discovers that her missing sister is not the only secret being kept hidden. On the surface, you think Blood & Water might be the standard teen show filled with hormones, angst, and soapy drama. It was clear to me after the first episode that this was far from it - the mystery elements are was keeps you tied in it. The actors keep the intrigue alive with their performances. You also would think this series is driven by the plotline of Phume being kidnapped at birth and Puleng's investigation. In my opinion, the character growth is what drives this show forward instead. I don't think any character was locked into one label. Every character had their own motivations - whether it was Puleng's drive to find her sister or Wendy wanting to do everything on merit. A lot of the characters say and do things that don't leave much sympathy for them, especially Puleng. By the end, I loved that the characters didn't feel the same ones I was introduced to in episode one. There is nothing new going on in this show, but with the short episode, run makes this an easy watch. I had to know whether Puleng would find out the truth, but as it went along - I had to know if she was going to be safe or not. The lies and deception seemed to build on top of each other enough to keep watching. Now that we know this has been renewed for a season two, we'll just have to make it last for now.
South African music is the true underdog here.
