You're telling me there's gold on this island? I was delighted with how the first season of this series turned out so I dove in quickly to see where this can go. Let's just say – I disagree with the critics but more on that later. Season 2 of Anne with an E continues the misadventures of one redheaded girl. The town has new visitors who hint at the possibility of discovering gold in Avonlea. No one is immune to what that could mean in this tiny town. Anne can get close and personal since the new visitors are boarding at Green Gables, but she soon discovers that something isn't quite adding up in the search for gold. Marilla and Matthew begin to feel their old age on top of Anne growing up. Gilbert has left to escape his father's death. He travels the world on a steamer, but discovers with the help of his friend, Bash, that Avonlea will always be home. With the gold fever spreading and a new teacher ready to shake up with unconventional teaching methods, Anne, Gilbert, and Avonlea will never be the same. I was so excited to keep my love for Anne of Green Gables alive with another season of this show. I wasn't sure if they were going to continue following the book series, so I had to find out. I have to say... I completely disagree with how people (cough, critics, cough) reviewed this season, and I will explain why. This season took a darker turn this time around. With sinister boarders and Gilbert learning the harsh realities of racism and his privilege, they didn't shy away from the stickier aspects. None of these things actually happened in the books from what I can remember. I liked that the show took a sharp left turn from the innocent books of my childhood. We got some drama there, but it was nothing compared to what the show now has to offer. Amybeth McNulty still shined as Anne. Even with her temper and her penchant of misadventure, she still was the lovable girl character of my childhood. I will say, watching her have a meltdown over getting her period and 'becoming' a woman was the most on-brand thing I have ever seen. I also loved that she grew so much from season 1. But she still had so many ways to continue on her path to adulthood because she wasn't perfect. The subtle (okay, let's get real... they're not that subtle) nods to her and Gilbert's relationship was so pure and wholesome. It was clear that Anne made her impact both in Avonlea and across oceans. That's what made me love this season more than the critics. I'm so glad that even when it wasn't based on the source materials that I was still given the Anne I knew so well. That's all I can ask for, really.
Still looking for my Gilbert Blythe if anyone is still wondering.
