I think we all deserve a pump-up jam in our lives. So I don't know if this is a secret or not, but I've had a newly discovered love of both Sabrina Carpenter. This was technically everything i could've wanted to see her be a lead in a project. Work It centers around Quinn – a certified overachiever with a jam-packed resume hoping to make it into her dream school. Her dreams come crumbling down when the college recruiter says that her application doesn't stand out of the crowd. Quinn accidentally makes the recruiter believe she's on her high school's nationally-renowed dance team. Beyond the fact it's a lie, Quinn actually can't dance. She's determined even after her failed audition. Quinn convinces her best friend and a group of people with potential to form their own dance team. Along the way, she convinces former champion Jake to choreograph for them and develops a crush on him. Can they get their act together to win the competition? What makes this movie work in its favor is the fully wonderful and talented cast. Sabrina was able to convince me she's a clumsy sweet person who literally can't dance – and she's literally a pop star. Liza really plays a good foil as the outgoing, witty best friend who is actually good at dancing. It really hit home that you can be good at many different things that don't revolve around one artistic path. Of course, Jordan really nailed it at the charming romantic interest. Like most teen movies, you get exactly what was advertised in the trailer. A movie about dancing. It has everything you can expect in such a movie: the underdogs and the misfit gang, high pressures of a high school student, an embarrassing and over-bearing parent, and, of course, first love. Don't forget the big realization after a journey of discovering yourself. Yes, it was all packed in there and made it work. Work It was like if Dirty Dancing got a modern glow-up.. In a lot of ways, it makes it predictable, but that also means it's good to just... be. Netflix can really corner on the market in this genre. Of course, High School Musical made it big for a reason. This will be a new thing for many years to come, I imagine.
Yes, my obsession with Sabrina is still going strong. Thanks for asking!
