They did NOT come to play games in this movie. If there's anything you take away from my reviews is that there is a pool of actors and actresses that anything they star in is something I'm going to watch. Miss Charlize is one of them, and the fact it was the action movie we deserve after all this time helped. The Old Guard introduces us right away to a team of vigilantes who risk their lives in dangerous missions on occasion. Such as saving a group of African girls who are being held captive as hostages in Sudan, for example. The difference-maker in these vigilantes? They're all immortal and can regenerate within minutes of 'dying.' Their secret gets outed, and now they are all in danger. At the same time, the leader Andy and the group discover there's another immortal on Earth for the first time in several centuries. After extracting the new immortal from her military life, Andy and the rest of the crew must find the man who outed their secret and stop the threats on their lives immediately. Again... I heard action, I heard fantasy and religious overtones, and then I heard Miss Charlize was the lead. I had to watch this not only on this basis, but my best friend Everett said it's one of the best movies of the year. I do not take anything of his opinion lightly, so I knew him saying this was True and Very Important. Gina Prince-Bythewood is the first Black woman to direct a big-budget action movie for not only Netflix but just in Hollywood in general. She not only delivered on the enormous moments of action and ass-kicking but also those intimate one-on-ones between characters. She had the challenge of packing in a lot of info and background, but she made it seem effortless and flawless without any hiccups. We get enough insight into how the immortals operated and what they did. But we also learned the dire situation of what could happen should their secret be outed. I also believe this is the first unique storyline I've seen in a hot minute. Immortality is often explored in fantasy movies, but never something like this. I cannot have anything to compare this to, which means it stands alone in its greatness. It makes you sit back and wonder - what would you do with immortality? It's thought-provoking in the most unobtrusive way. It's straightforward and honest because action movies do not need to be pretentious to be great. Once again, Miss Charlize did not miss with this one. I don't know if my opinion matters in the slightest, but I would pay a lot of my own money to produce a sequel if it came down to it. That's how much I like and believe in this movie.
In other news, give Black women more opportunities. That's all.
