The comedy duo we deserve. This was another thing meant for theaters but had to be streamed instead. Issa and Kumail deserved to shine onscreen, but we'll make due with this. The Lovebirds introduces us to Jibran and Leilani. Their relationship has simmered down from its sizzling start, and now they're calling it quits four years later. Before they can cut all ties, they are implicated in a hit-and-run murder plot. Now Jibran and Leilani have to go on the run to try and figure out who the murderer is - but also why they did it. I needed a good, genuine comedy to get me through these days. Self-isolation seems never-ending, and I needed something to tide me over. This was the perfect thing. Movies are no strangers to the bickering couple trope, and I doubt it will ever be so. I honestly can't say after this that I'll be tired of it any time soon. Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani's chemistry was absolutely off the charts the entire movie. Jibran and Leilani were so dysfunctional but were absolute magic together somehow. They had this uncanny way to communicate with each other without fault. Each blunder was so typical of a standard rom-com that we're all used to. What's even more fascinating to watch is how they felt open with each other to be so honest even after breaking up. I have no idea how they did it, but I think it shows to each of their strengths that they could literally banter under duress. Now you may be wondering: in what world does a couple get implicated for murdering a man literally seconds after breaking up with each other? Apparently, it's real for Jibran and Leilani. At times their adventures to find the real murderer feels a bit like bumbling ridiculousness. It feels like pure luck that they're able to piece together a night-long journey to find out a way to save them from going to jail. I'll be honest if it was anyone other than Issa and Kumail playing Leilani or Jibran respectively, this movie wouldn't work. We know it's movie magic that everything goes so well for them, but that doesn't make this comedy any less exceptional. I know this movie will feel a little too silly to some, especially with a plot we're all too familiar with. Honestly, I think this fluffy comedy is something we need in a time where happiness is needed most.
If this doesn't indicate we need more diversity in the rom-com genre, then I don't know what else to say to convinced y'all!
