I, too, would make a fool of myself for a boy! Netflix has an extensive line-up of rom coms now (and sequels!!!), so I want to keep up with it, so I don't get behind. With the sequel of this particular movie coming out this Friday, I had to watch it to be prepared. The Kissing Booth introduces us to lifelong childhood friends, Elle and Lee. Their mothers are best friends, and so are they. Putting it lightly, they do everything together and are rarely seen without the other. Their junior year of high school brings them together to put on a kissing booth for a fundraiser during this year's carnival. While putting it on, Elle becomes attracted to Lee's older brother, Noah, despite having a rule not getting involved with him. Elle ends up getting a turn in the kissing booth and finds... Noah. They slowly start to fall for each other, but how long can they keep it a secret from Lee? Look, I will start off by saying this is not the greatest rom-com ever made. I have that reserved for a couple other movies. However, I did not come here to be wowed. I came here for the forbidden romance of it all, and I will judge it on that basis. This movie had such an appealing cast. Joey King and Joel Courtney had impeccable childhood-best-friends-passing-off-as-siblings energy that it felt real to me. I never questioned the legitimacy of their friendship because they were weird and quirky that you would find from two people who are basically family now. Joey's chemistry with Jacob Elordi was also insane to me. I liked the opposing tropes they played – an innocent girl with a bad-boy older brother. I'm a sucker for a forbidden romance, so naturally, this set-up was perfect for me and all my chaotic sensibilities. My biggest issue is there are some problems with the pacing. The majority of the problem is how Elle and Noah try to keep their secret from Lee, but they don't get together until deep into the film. Had they gotten together sooner, I feel like the pacing would've been smoother. Some story gaps filled, and there would've been a bigger payoff for the climax then the resolution. Also, like most romcoms, you could see how this ended from a mile away. I'm not one to ever complain about that because we all deserve happy endings every once in a while! This rom-com is not without its tropes and stereotypes – it actually thrives on them. If that kind of thing that makes you roll your eyes so hard, it makes you see your brain, then avoid this movie. If it's the opposite and it makes you LIVE, then continue on, my friends.
The kissing booth idea hits different now, but I appreciate the boldness all the same!
