Post Malone? Post Malone! This was a wild ride from start to finish. Like right out the gate, Mark Wahlberg is beating the living daylights out of a guy with no explanation for us to know why. Spenser Confidential is a movie that was adapted from Robert B. Parker's Wonderland that follows Spenser (wild, I know). Played by Mark Wahlberg, He's an ex-cop who just got out of prison and is looking to leave Boston to start a new chapter. Before he can leave, Spenser gets persuaded to train an amateur boxer, Hawk, played by Winston Duke. When two cops wind up dead in mysterious ways, Spenser decides to investigate. He recruits Hawk and his ex-girlfriend Cissy, played by Iliza Shlesinger, to help figure out how deep corruption actually goes. If you're looking for something that delivers non-stop action, then Spenser Confidential is for you. It definitely keeps you entertained, but not without some cringe aspects. This is one of those Big Action Movies that follows formulaic delivery and expectations. You know exactly where this plot is going to go. You know that Mark Wahlberg's character is going to unveil how deep corruption goes in the Boston PD, you'll know that the "last person" to be involved in said corruption is the police chief, and you know that Spenser will save the day. It's mindless and something you could probably put in the background while you work. I enjoyed this movie the first go-round, I'm not sure I would pick this for a future watch. Beyond the predictable plot, I need the crazy ex-girlfriend trope to die. I have seen a lot of Iliza Schlesinger's stand-ups (also on Netflix!) because they're amazing, but none of her actual comedy is infused into her character. Sadly she got reduced in an over-the-top accent having, foul-mouthed Bostonian old flame who ran hot and cold to Spenser's every move. She could've stolen scenes like Alan Arkin, who still has perfect comedic timing, by the way, did when he was there. This movie needed more moments to laugh to let us breathe, and the action dies down, but that's just my opinion. Are we just going to ignore how Post Malone was in this movie? As a Nazi prisoner who tries to shank Spenser? Literally, what even. This movie ended with a semi-open ending, which means we may see more of Spenser in the future.
But honestly, who knows what Netflix does these days?
