Commentary on class status and morality? More likely than you think! Ever since falling in love with Parasite earlier this year, I wanted to see something else of Bong Joon-ho's genius. So... here we are. Snowpiercer takes place in 2031 on an Earth that has entered its new Ice Age. The frozen wasteland is uninhabitable and as a result, the last of the human race lives on a sustainable train that travels around the snow-capped world. The tail-end of the train is where the poorest of the poor live – and they are tired of it. A rebellion happens with Curtis leading the way, along with Namgoong and his daughter Yona. They have to travel from the tail to the engine, a place no rear end dweller has ever been. Can Curtis take his rebellion all the way? Listen, I don't need to tell you that Bong Joon-ho is a genius if you saw Parasite. It's clear that his genius was just sitting waiting for us. If you're into sci-fi and the thrills of an action movie, then you'll love this one right away. The visual effects of the snowy wasteland was stunning and took my breath away like I was out there frozen myself. Bong Joon-ho proved he can work in a confined space such as a single household, but he also proved that when given the materials he can expand to a world we can only begin to dream of. The themes in this movie, just like Parasite, were filled with commentary that you couldn't ignore. The strong themes of class warfare is never too heavy to the point it's suffacatting. If anything, by the end of the film I thought it became a driving point of ambition and hope. It helps that Joon-ho is a master of pacing to never keep the film boring. If it was anyone else, having to film in one long train corridor could be reptitive. Having a rear cartful (literally) of characters and giving them time to shine is what makes this movie great. Bong Joon-ho did it once again. Well, he already did it but I'm saying it now since I just got to this one now. This proves Parasite, though the more recent release, is not a one-off fluke.
Trust me, we'll see more of his excellent work in the future.
