Y'all ready for the longest movie watch of your life? The Irishman is the second movie in our Oscars movie watch. Boy, was this a lesson that maybe you can complete the entire journey to Mordor faster than completing this movie. (Very much a joke, but here's a LoTR gif for tax.) For those that don't know, this film is actually based on a non-fiction book called I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt. The plot centers around Frank Sheehan, played by Frank De Niro, who recounts his life working as a hit-man for Russell Bufalino, played by Joe Pesci, and the Bufalino mobster family along with his involvement with Jimmy Hoffa, played by Al Pacino, and his disappearance. Look, I think I can be the official person to say this who has sat year after year watching long awards ceremonies on TV, but this movie was so long. Nearly three and a half hours for a mob movie is... a bold move to make, but not so much if you're Martin Scorsese and know people* will watch anyway. (*It's me. I'm the people.) Another bold move is investing so much in the CGI retouch-ups for the main actors since they are playing younger versions of 'themselves' for a good portion of run time but I guess I won't care if De Niro sends the skincare routine ASAP! But back to the important stuff... If I had to pick the stand out stars in this movie, it would be Joe Pesci and Anna Paquin, who played one of Frank Sheehan's children. They both have this impeccable ability to act without saying anything and going beyond acting from the script. Not really sure if many can do it, but they both act with such power that they steal every bit of the scenes they are in. This movie was just a reminder that the Academy so desperately wants another Godfather moment so it's literally no surprise why this movie got nominated. In my opinion, Scorsese's artistic direction was confusing. It felt like it wanted to seem like a documentary since it was recounting Frank's life story, but didn't at the same time. The only thing truly holding me back from saying I would watch this movie again is two-fold:
If you would like to purchase I Heard You Paint Houses, you can do so here or at your local bookstore.
