Do we really need another story about divorce? Let me tell you, I have never felt such mixed feelings about a movie that is so widely praised like this one. Bear with me. Marriage Story is a film that follows a stage director, played by Adam Driver, and his actor wife, played by Scarlett Johansson, struggling in all stages of a messy, long-distance divorce. That's it. That's the movie. Let's start off with the positives. I have to applaud Baumbach for doing it in the most realistic way possible when it comes to messy divorces. What I liked most about his directing choices was showcasing that divorce can be viewed very differently between two people. You have one who thought they were just disagreeing, all to come together again and the other who thought it was too far gone for recovery. It shows that humans are flawed, emotionally complex and that divorce can really bring out the worst in us. Now to the parts I'm not sure about. I'm the adult that has had to deal with the aftermath of a messy divorce, long after childhood. This movie hit a little too close to home for me, and I think that's why I had a hard time connecting with it. You would think the opposite, but not for me in this case. I almost changed my mind in my praise of Baumbach's realistic dealings because that was also something I heavily dislike about this movie. You want to know what this movie is like? It felt like Johansson and Driver were that couple who decided to argue in the grocery store and we're all just trying to wonder if we should awkwardly ask them to move because they're standing in front of the one thing you need on your list. Imagine that for two hours, and you have Marriage Story. Divorce is the one thing Hollywood will rarely ever do right, in my opinion. I understand why both Driver and Johansson got nominated for this movie because they acted their asses off.
Will I rewatch this movie in the future? Only if I want my mental health to suffer again!
