Me loving a war movie? More likely than you think! If this is a safe space where I can be honest, then I'm going to say this was the biggest surprise of all the nominees I've seen so far. (This is a very good thing.) 1917 is set during the height of World War I in Europe. Two young soldiers, Schofield played by George MacKay and Blake played by Dean-Charles Chapman, are given what seems to be an impossible, near-death wish mission. They have to race across no man's land, enemy territory, and against time with a message to stop a deadly attack that could jeopardize the lives of hundreds of soldiers. If you told me that a war movie would actually create a passion and love similar to what I felt after Little Women... I never would've believed you, and yet here we are! I'm just as surprised as you are. This movie was just so incredible in all aspects. This is the second movie in the list of Best Picture nominees that I am completely happy with the fact it got nominated. The best part of this movie is the directing. The whole thing was shot in long takes, or also known as continuous shots, to make it seem like one long moment. There's no cutaway or editing, so you do not miss a single moment of Schofield's and Blake's adventures to get the message out to another battalion. I felt like I couldn't look away due to what was happening since anything could happen. Of course, the actors also helped seal the deal. I had to stop myself several times to stop yelling at my screen for them to go faster. Like I have never known so much stress in my life watching Schofield run through those ruins and the battlefield. I wish I was kidding. The only reason why this isn't a perfect movie is I had to keep pausing to learn about World War I. In the grand scheme of things, if that's my only complaint then that's basically nothing for everyone else.
Will my anxiety ever come back from (this movie) war? Probably not!
