Imagine if Adam Sandler attempted to direct Clue and this is it. Now I think this a good time that Adam Sandler movies are a hit and miss with me. My last experience wasn't a great one, but I was hoping this new one would be better. Murder Mystery introduces us to Nick and Audrey Spitz, played by Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston, who decide to take their long-awaited Europe trip for their 15th anniversary. On a chance encounter in the plane ride over, Audrey meets a wealthy man who invites her and her husband to a party on his rich uncle's yacht. The first night they are there leads to the rich uncle being murdered. Everyone on board had a reason to want the rich uncle to die... But the fingers get pointed at Nick and Audrey instead. The mayhem begins as Nick and Audrey try to find the killer before the worst happens to them first. I will say this is a step up from my previous watches of Sandler movies. With a downplayed version of his normally raunchy, frat-boy humor, this movie was a somewhat entertaining take on the classic whodunnit murder mysteries. Please note that I said somewhat. This movie was enjoyable for the most part. Aniston and Sandler really played to their strengths, which ironically were the stereotypes they leaned into. Aniston is almost eager to solve this crime, given her obsession with true crime novels while Sandler plays the bumbling husband. You would think these stereotypes are played out, but they played them really well enough to give us convincing performances. Like in a normal whodunnit, this movie did not give us anything new to expect. A crowd of people discovers a murder, but anyone could be the murderer. There are accusations thrown around, chases after suspects, and lots of hiding in random spaces. It really plays into the tropes of the genre, but it's nothing we haven't seen before. With that said, everyone looked to have a great time, even after the dramatic reveal. This movie did not wow me, but I can't say that I didn't enjoy the ride along the way. If anything, it wanted me to play Clue by the time it was over.
It gave me the laughs I was looking for. What more could I want?
