Alexa, play Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince on repeat! When Netflix announced this documentary last year, Swifties* about broke the internet. (*It's me - I was freaking out enough to break the internet.) Miss Americana centers around Taylor Swift and a look into her life from the start of her fame to how she's going to move forward. Packed with nostalgic home videos from her childhood, her teen years, and even some iconic concert footage, this documentary shows Swift's personal side of the story. The documentary doesn't shy away from the good and the bad moments - it addresses her country star roots and being known as The Nice Girl, that infamous 2009 VMAs moment, the media's loud criticism of her, her sexual assault trial, and coverage of how her last two albums, reputation and Lover, were made. Swift turning 30, on top of everything else, gives her the push to finally be comfortable in being an activist and going public with her political stance. If I had to pick one word to describe this documentary it would be: surprising. Not in a bad way, but by the time the credits were rolling I just sat there in shock. I just never realized how much we knew, but also didn't know. Many documentaries like this could easily be pretentious or not as candid as they like to promote. What makes this one so raw and honest is the fact Taylor was willing to go deep. She didn't hide behind the darker bits of her fame - like her continued privilege of avoiding taking a political stance, her body dysmorphia that led to a subsequent eating disorder, and also how her decade-long feud with Kanye led to some of the most dark times in her mental health and self-esteem. Despite not really sure if she had a career left to salvage post-2016, she took the time to do some personal growth to come out stronger than ever. This documentary was marketed as Taylor's truth and she was finally ready to share it all. Even if you're not a fan, I have a feeling you'll like this documentary on the sheer fact it's well done and how we all can agree that growing up is hard.
Anyway, this is purely a stan account for Meredith, Olivia, and Benjamin respectively.
