I thought my life was chaotic. Netflix dropped a fantastic rom-com in Someone Great, so when I saw this, I was a little excited. I decided to watch it one night all prepared for a good time and, well... Desperados show us how far a panicked woman and her two best friends will go. How and why? Because Wesley, the panicked woman in question, has sent the world's most scathing rant email to a guy she thought ghosted her. In her desperation, she and her friends fly down to Mexico to try and delete the email before he leaves the hospital. Wesley will then encounter an old flame who somehow gets swept up in the scheme for her to keep her boyfriend. Where do I even begin with this one? The beginning concept proved promising. Wesley is 30 and has no job, no boyfriend, a mountain of bills to pay off, and a busted car if that wasn't enough. She also has this ability to never read the room properly and says a little too much. It explains why Wesley has no boyfriend or a job yet. Then she meets the Perfect Guy and pretends to be something she's not to keep him around... until he ghosts her. This is where it starts getting a little ridiculous. I think we've all had experience in writing that scathing email or text rant that will supposedly give you closure if you hit send. However, the leap to a crazy plan to fly to Mexico to make sure the guy never reads the email after finding out he never actually ghosted you in the first place? If you can believe it, this is not even where the craziness ends. There's stingy hotel staff, cranky vacationers, horny dolphins, and oh, the ex who shows up somehow at the one hotel Wesley goes to in all of Cabo. The title is not an exaggeration. There's a desperation in all three women, but most of all, especially in Wesley. She is quite literally a mess and chaotic in a way that doesn't seem redeemable at times. Nasim Pedrad is quite funny and has a reputation from her days on Saturday Night Live, but it feels wasted here. It felt like it was trying too hard to be like Bridesmaids to be its own thing. It sucks, because like I said earlier, this had all the potential to be good. With that said, I don't think this was the worst movie I've ever seen. The trouble is I'm not sure I can bring myself to watch this ever again. Maybe if I was bored, but I don't think that's a good thing all on its own.
Time to go back to the drawing board for your rom-com genre, Netflix.
